Frequently Asked
FAQ Continued

If God doesn't intervene in human affairs, why bother with Deism? Deism teaches that we should use our own reasoning to solve problems. Deists can discuss different problems and find better answers by working together than they could on their own. Also, Deists have a sense that there is some reason for their existence, even if they do not know what that reason is. This can be comforting to many Deists.

If Deists believe in God, why do they reject Christianity, Judaism, and Islam?
Deists doubt that there are truly revelations from God. If God did choose to reveal anything to a human, that person could not reliably pass that revelation on to another person. Due to the limits of language, one person could never convey something as personal as a revelation from God to another person. Most Deists also recognize the inconsistencies in the holy books of the major religions. Deists believe the best way to determine the nature of God is through His creation. The language of nature is universal, and so it has no need of translation.

Do Deists have any moral codes? Why bother to be moral if God will not intervene or punish you?
Deists recognize that they live in a society. That society must have order for it to thrive. And if that society doesn’t thrive, neither will the individual. Therefore, Deists consider what implications their actions will for society as well as for themselves. So Deists do, in fact, consider morality very important. Deists derive their morality from their own reasoning and studies. Many of them base their morality on some form of the Golden Rule.

Is Deism a religion or a category of belief?
There is a strong case for calling Deism a category of belief like Theism or Atheism or Agnosticism. Deism is a broad definition with sub-categories. But again, it is up to individual Deists to decide.

Do Deists pray?
Some Deists pray, but many do not. Deists who do pray are often giving thanks to God for what they have. This is not so much to please God by thanking Him for his providence, but to help individual Deists recognize all of the good things that they have in their life.
