What is Deism today? For the most part, I think it is
safe to say that today's Deism is not the same as the Deism during or
following the enlightenment. That is my opinion, not fact, but I think
you can find a lot of contemporary Deists who would believe. I should
point out that by using the term "contemporary Deism" I mean the Deism
of today, i.e. Deism in the modern era. I am making a distinction
between today's Deism and "Modern Deism", which is considered by some
to be a distinct sub-category of Deism. In fact, I personally believe
that Modern Deism actually is a distinct sub-category of Deism.
Remember, this is a site that promotes Deism, not a neutral source.
You will find opinion here, not just fact. I would classify my own
Deist beliefs as a form of Modern Deism.
So, what types of Deism are around today? There is no definitive list
that I am aware. I have posted a list here with the
sub-categories I
know of. Feel free to send me updates. Just click on Email Suggestions

A distinction that I find important is one of attitude. I believe
that most Deists start out with views that are critical of organized
religion. Not all Deists start out critical, but most of the
"testimonials" I hear are from people who lose faith in or become
disillusioned with their former religion. Many read Thomas Paine or
another Classical Deist who is critical of revealed religion. In my own
opinion, such critical Deism does provide a firm foundation for Deism to
grow and become a positive force in the lives of a broad variety of
people. Criticism gets old. We need something to believe in, not just
something to disbelieve. I think positive will always ultimately win out
over negative.
